Ontario legislature adjourns without adopting Ford’s bill to cancel cap and trade

The Ontario legislature has adjourned for the summer without adopting the Ford government’s bill to formally shut down the province’s carbon trading market.

Ontario’s environment minister had unveiled the new legislation called the “Cap and Trade Cancellation Act” (or Bill 4) to end Ontario’s cap-and-trade program, claiming it will save the average family $260 per year.

The bill includes provisions that would require him to outline new emissions targets, without legally requiring the province to adhere to them.

“‎Bill 4 is a priority for the government and will come up for debate when the legislature resumes in the fall,” said a spokesperson for Government and Consumer Services Minister Todd Smith, in an email to National Observer.
